Expanding Capacity at Randwick
Trainer Michael Freedman has made notable advancements at his Randwick stables, securing an additional 20 boxes from the Australian Turf Club. This expansion comes during a period when he is also preparing for the refurbishment of the historic 65-box Leilani Lodge, previously managed by Bart Cummings.
This week marked a turning point for Freedman as he finalized the deal for the extra stabling at Royal Randwick, allowing him to elevate his barn capacity to 75 boxes. The recent negotiations resulted in trainer Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott returning 20 boxes, which Freedman views as a beneficial compromise given his increasing needs.
Freedman has expressed relief over the extra space. “We’d been a bit tight for space over the last few months, so it’s nice to get a few extra boxes and take a little bit of pressure off,” he noted, emphasizing that this development provides him the necessary flexibility to manage his growing stable.
Thrill Hunter: A New Entry
This Saturday, Freedman is set to debut Thrill Hunter, a promising filly who is primed for her first appearance under his training in a 1100m two-year-old open handicap. Originally trained by Terry Croft, Thrill Hunter debuted with a surprising victory at the Kirkham Plate but faced challenges in the subsequent $1 million Golden Gift, culminating in a tenth-place finish after experiencing interference.
The filly’s journey to Freedman’s yard wasn’t straightforward. Due to an accident that required her to take time off for recovery, she has since undergone two trials, impressing in both and indicating she is ready for a competitive run. With experienced jockey Tommy Berry set to ride her from gate three, expectations are cautiously optimistic with her positioned as a $15 underdog in the race.
Other Notable Horses in the Stable
Freedman’s focus isn’t solely on Thrill Hunter. He also has Satin Summer in the mix but is considering postponing her race entry due to unfavorable draw circumstances. Furthermore, he was preparing to scratch Polyglot for similar reasons regarding another wide gate.
Another thoroughbred, Apocalyptic, has recently shown promising signs in a Rosehill trial after a challenging spell. Last season, she achieved significant wins, including the Furious and Flight Stakes, but needed a break to address lingering issues. Freedman remains hopeful for her future, eyeing races in the 1200-1400m range, although he admits uncertainty regarding her capacity for longer distances.
Insights from Stablemates
Co-trainer Adrian Bott shared insights on the performance of their two horses, Eviction Notice and Sly Boots, both of whom are anticipating an improvement on a drier surface at Randwick this weekend. Eviction Notice, who showcased potential in earlier races including a strong return from gelding, aims for better execution following a second-place finish in July.
Bott believes that a favorable track could enhance Eviction Notice's performance significantly. “If we can keep getting on a drier surface for the weekend, that’s going to be a big positive,” he mentioned, highlighting his expectations for the two-year-old's improvement.
Meanwhile, Sly Boots will also benefit from a drier track after a disappointing last outing. Bott has noted the horse’s ongoing struggle with racing conditions, adding, “When he’s had the right conditions, he just hasn’t had quite the luck in running, and when he’s had the luck in running, he hasn’t had the right conditions.”
Looking Ahead
As the racing weekend approaches, hopes ride high on Lady Invictus, currently favored at $3.70 following a strong showing in her last race. Bott believes her performance will be pivotal, noting the confidence boost from her previous win and her readiness for increased competition.
Freedman's strategic moves and keen eye for talent within his stable illustrate a promising outlook not just for him, but for the horses he nurtures. With Thrill Hunter stepping into the spotlight and the adjustments at Randwick, the coming racing days are set to be pivotal for his team.
