Kapitolyo, once just a name in my acquaintanceship, has transformed into a notable destination, especially known for its vibrant café scene. This area has evolved beyond its humble beginnings, becoming a vital part of my post-work relaxation routine at Rappler. What eventually made Kapitolyo stand out for me was the charm of its café community, which provides a perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of daily life.

In our pursuit of enjoyable café experiences, we opted for an old-school approach—exploring the neighborhood on foot and seeking recommendations from friends. The results of this cozy exploration revealed three standout cafés, each offering a distinct vibe and a plethora of delightful options that effortlessly passed the “coziness test.”

Loop Kapitolyo: A Haven for Matcha Lovers

For those seeking a tranquil spot to unwind, Loop Kapitolyo is a must-visit. As owner Luis Padilla expresses, “A good cup of matcha is rooted in intention,” and that emphasis on quality is palpable in every sip. While the café's matcha offerings, especially the Sea Salt Matcha—a light, subtly sweet drink enhanced with artisanal sea salt from Bohol—take center stage, their menu caters to other tastes as well. Options like the Coconut Espresso and Honey Shaken Oat Latte have also taken off among regulars.

The ambiance here strikes a balance between stylish and comfortable, perfect for those looking to concentrate or chat among friends. With ample power sockets and a layout conducive to productivity, it’s no wonder that morning joggers and cyclists often stop by to relax after their sessions. The community spirit reigns prominent as individuals of all ages gather, making Loop a welcoming spot for everyone.

The Beachhouse: A Maximalist Dream for Cat Lovers

The Beachhouse presents a unique experience that feels more like stepping into a vibrant, lived-in home than a typical café. Co-founded by Jelito de Leon, the café is adorned with quirky decorations sourced from passions and experiences of the team, creating a vibrant and playful atmosphere they lovingly refer to as “dopamine decor.”

Upon entering, expect to see everything from Polaroid photos to eclectic furnishings, effectively inviting longer stays. Drink-wise, their specialty, the Kamote Cold Brew, is an unexpected delight, blending sweet potato with coffee for a unique flavor profile. Their Coconut Cream Matcha is also not to be missed, both for its taste and texture.

This multi-level café caters to every mood, featuring cozy rooms perfect for introspective moments, as well as open areas ideal for lively conversations. With a resident cat named CC, there’s plenty of charm to go around. A strong sense of community emanates from The Beachhouse, evident in the friendships formed between regular customers and baristas.

Pancho Café: The 24-Hour Retreat

If you’re looking for a café where you can linger indefinitely, Pancho Café should be your destination. Open 24 hours, this Italian-inspired café offers a plethora of activities and features that encourage patrons to stay for a while. With everything from an Instagram-worthy photo booth to a stunning flower shop, there’s no shortage of ways to pass the time.

The menu includes irresistible Italian dishes, particularly the rich lasagna and delectable croissants. The coffee, notably the Caramel Macchiato, strikes a balance between creamy and sweet, appealing even to those who prefer less sugary options. For those who prefer late-night outings, the café is lively between 9 pm and 3 am, but morning visitors can also enjoy a serene experience with Pancho’s carefully curated playlists.
